About Us

Let me introduce myself. I'm Daniel Suppey, the founder and chief recipe developer of Kyon Drinks. I've never been much of an alcohol drinker. My personal imbibing was limited to an occasional glass of wine and champagne socially, but for some time, a personal tragedy troubled me and led me to stop drinking altogether. My very talented oldest brother drank excessively, ultimately causing liver failure from which he died. I loved my brother and looked up to him. I realised that I could make some kind of sense of his premature death by taking a positive step. It was a wakeup call. Giving up alcohol. was just the start. I wanted to do more. Looking around, it was difficult to find in those days interesting tasting, healthy, banging and kicking drinks that were completely non-alcoholic.

One day, I decided to experiment with a drink that balanced, taste - sourness, sweetness, umami, with a natural ginger zing, replacing the kick sought in alcoholic beverages. I made my first prototype of the Ppinger drink at a Saturday lunch party for 12 people who were all teetotal too. While shopping for lunch, I chose some apple juice, elderflower juice, fresh organic ginger and fresh lemon to make the drink which I hoped my lunch party guests would enjoy.

Boom! The drink took off that afternoon to the extent that several party guests requested the recipe, which did not really exist, and another guest suggested turning the product into a commercial

enterprise which I thought was the funniest suggestion I'd ever heard! At this point my family and I owned a finance business. Those who asked for the recipe took away some drinks, along with my promise to make it again for them on request. And yes, the requests did come.

Roughly a year after the lunch party and several requests for follow-on batches of the drink, I travelled to Ghana, where I'd been raised, and brought back forty kilos of fresh organic ginger. The plan was to make a big batch of this drink, which didn't have a name at that time, but would become the Ppinger, and distribute it widely among our neighbours in Bromley, then further afield to test the market. The market research process started in the middle of December 2019, and by the start of February 2020, we had achieved sales of around 400 bottles in the 750ml bottle size. The 250ml bottle size would be introduced later. What had started as a bit of entrepreneurial fun, was rapidly turning into a viable business.

Many people who were invited to sample the drink for free, upon tasting, were keen to purchase the drink and recommended it to friends and family. Someone then called to ask if we had a website where they could order the product. Around this time, Covid-19 arrived in Europe and the UK was locked down at the start of March 2020. Far from getting despondent and down-hearted, we used the extra free time to create a new soft drinks brand. The rest, as they say, is history. We worked flat out from the start of March 2020 to launch the Ppinger in September of the same year. At the time of launch, the fresh lemon had been replaced with fresh lime purely because it was sharper in taste and cut through the rest of the ingredients better to create a much more enjoyable drinking experience. To ensure the quality of our organic ginger ingredients, we began to use fresh organic ginger from Peru and Costa Rica purely because the quality was great, plus the ginger had organic certification from organisations like the UK based Soil Association and other recognised certification bodies. While we worked to launch the product, customers were still buying the drink without a label, which was perfectly legal.

During COVID, we would make the drink and deliver it all over London and the home counties throughout lockdown. This was legal of course because safe food delivery was allowed during that period. We would deliver the order to the customer’s door, ring the bell and step back into the safety of the car to watch the customer collect their parcel. On return, we would wash ourselves immediately and change into fresh clothes. Those were the scary days of Covid-19 when very little was known about the virus.

The brand is evolving all the time. We now have five different natural fruit flavoured drinks with no artificial additives, all with a ginger base of varying strengths. Plans are afoot to produce a ginger shots range with some exciting functional benefits. We are committed to making health boosting, flavoursome drinks and shots that really benefit you, the consumer. We are proud that we are able to achieve a balance of both health benefits and great flavour in our products. This year (2024), we have opened a new bottling and distribution plant, and our sights are set on further growth. Join us on our journey. Let's make healthy drinking the norm and not simply an aspiration!

Functional Ingredients

Food can be either a source of nourishment and healing when the right things are eaten, or merely a source of calories and potentially illness over the long term. Defined as foods that contain, in addition to nutrients, other components that may be beneficial to health, functional foods are set to explode as a significant food and beverage sub-sector. The Mayo Clinic defines these foods as “…. foods that have a potentially positive effect on health beyond basic nutrition”. With a growing desire among consumers to ingest foods and beverages that provide other functionalities beyond providing basic nutrition and calories.

Ginger - Our Star Ingredient

History of Ginger

Packed with antioxidants and with a myriad of health benefits, this superfood also has a fascinating history. Originating in southern parts of China, its popularity quickly spread throughout the rest of Asia, India and the Spice Islands to West Africa. Ginger was brought to Europe in the 1st century by the Romans but following the fall of the Roman Empire, it slipped into relative obscurity until Marco Polo brought it back from his Eastern travels. With the discovery of the New World in the 15th century, ginger was taken to the Caribbean where it continues to flourish. Considered a luxury for over 5,000 years, ginger is now widely available. Today, India is the largest producer of ginger in the world.

Peruvian Ginger - Our Choice

Having sampled ginger from various countries, we have chosen Peru as the provider for our hero ingredient. Our preference is based on the more rounded flavour of their yellow ginger variety as well as for traceability. The Peruvian organic ginger we use is certified organic by reputable bodies such as the Soil Association.
